For years, athlete Mike Hopkins has been inspiring others with his impressive talent in freeride mountain biking. Born in British Columbia, the bike star ended up in Rossland, a beautiful area that he labels “Canada’s hidden adventure sport gem.” As there was little to do in Rossland, Hopkins spent his winters exploring the area on skis and his summers riding around on his bike. What started as a way to kill time quickly became a favorite hobby, and later transformed into a successful career. What is unique about Hopkins is that he is a two-season athlete. Most skiers remain train in skiing all year round, while other mountain bikers stick to the bike. Hopkins not only manages to continue both sports, but excels at them as well.

Mike Hopkins first got his start in skiing competitions in 2006. He started by competing in three of the skiing championships in Canada where he blew away the competition with his athleticism. After finding success in skiing, he started getting sponsors for freeride biking as well. The decision to pursue biking happened when Derek Frankowski moved into Rossland. As the photographer for Bike Magazine, Frankowski held a lot of influence over Hopkins. After shooting some photographs of Hopkins, Frankowski managed to convince the athlete that taking up competitive biking just might be a good decision.

Hopkins’ skiing and biking has led him from professional athlete to movie star. Again working with Derek Frankowski, Hopkins filmed Life Cycles. He considers the project to be the one of the best bike movies to date. In addition to working on the bike movie, Hopkins has gotten involved with a few other film projects, namely ski videos for the web.

Mike Hopkins’ success comes from a dedication to his sport, plenty of natural talented and most of all, the fact that he thoroughly enjoys what he is doing. He has already accomplished quite a bit, but he has no plans to slow down. He hopes to continue his pursuit of athletics while working more in film. Fans will surely be seeing a lot more of this talented skiers, mountain biker and filmmaker in the future.
